Tourism figures: Key headline figures for Thanet for 2006
It is estimated that around 498,596 overnight tourism staying trips were made to Thanet in 2006. Of these trips, domestic visitors made 83% of trips (412,093) and overseas visitors made 17% of trips (86,503). £89,385,814 was spent by staying visitors on their trip.
It is estimated that around 2.3 million tourism day trips were made to Thanet in 2006, generating a further £72,644,507 trip expenditure.
In total, around £162,030,321 was spent on trips to Thanet in 2006 by staying and day visitors. 37% of this expenditure was made by domestic staying visitors; 19% by overseas staying visitors and 44% by day visitors.
In addition, expenditure by friends and relatives on visitors, and visitors spend on second homes (i.e. maintenance) generates a further 12,690,000. With the addition of other expenditure tourism activity generated £174,720,321 expenditure.
Of this expenditure, £164,645,000 translates into direct income for local business; and a further £32,929,000 of income is generated through indirect and induced effects (a total of £197,574,000 business turnover).
This income supported 3,440 FTE jobs and 4,705 Actual jobs. Overall it is estimated that tourism expenditure supported 7% of local employment.
