Margate in the early 1900s Some Pictures and a Street Directory for 1900
84 Pages A5 stapled booklet also includes 28 page description of Margate in 1900 produced with kind permission of Kellys Directories.
I have finally got around to doing this street directory for Margate, many of my customers who live there have asked me to. Apart for its obvious use in historical research I can thoroughly recommend it as a walking companion. Whereas the guides to the town old and modern describe the features of major significance you will find this directory points out the minutia of everyday life. Knowing the use of a building 100 years ago helps greatly to appreciate those features that still remain.
The original copies of kellys directories for this period are very scarce and frail items the paper was of the type that becomes crumbly with age. I have found that this makes them very difficult to use. These early kellys published before or during the First World War were bound as paperbacks I have never come across one for this period with its maps still in it, the map that I have included in the middle is about 1906 I think so you may find a few streets that were built between the production of the directory and the map.
The pictures are from my collection of old postcards of Thanet, the postmarks on those that had them were between 1900 and 1915.
I should like to thank the staff of Margate Museum (Market Place Margate) and Albion bookshop (Northdown Road) who are selling our publications, this has helped to make it possible for me to publish 2 books about Margate this month October 2005
