1897 ZZG or the Zig Zag Guide Round and About the Bold and Beautiful Kentish Coast. by Sir Frances Burnand pictures by Phil May This book is a description of the southeastern costal towns at the end of the Victorian era, the author Sir Frances Burnand was editor of Punch (the satirical magazine that started in the 1840s and ran for about 150 years) from 1880 to 1906. He also wrote burlesques, the most well known being "The Colonel" of 1881. Some of his humorous productions were set to music by the likes of Sir Arthur Sullivan. Burnand has a long association with Ramsgate where he was well known he bought a house in the town where he entertained his friends. Born in 1836 he died in Ramsgate in 1917 at 18 Royal Crescent and is buried in St. Augustine's Abby churchyard.
