A FATEFUL FINGER OF IRON

The story of the ill-fated Ramsgate Promenade Pier within a resort history of the town.

By Martin Easdown.

A5 format card cover – 66 Printed Pages

‘Many pictures of the Pier’

In the resort history of Ramsgate, its promenade pier does not hold a place at the top table. Sited away at the far end of the beach, it appears in the background of many photographs, but rarely features in one.

The probable reason for this is the sad fact that Ramsgate Pier, variously known as the Marina Pier, Iron Pier and the Promenade Pier, had, on the whole, a rather pitiful existence. For the majority of its life its home town regarded it as something of a joke; a figure of fun due to the fact it had never paid its way after bankrupting its promoting company and falling into the hands of the official receivers.
